Why keywords matter
When a recruiter searches an ATS for candidates, they typically search by job title, skills, and specific technologies. If those terms don't appear in your resume, your application may never surface — even if you have the relevant experience described in other words.
This doesn't mean you should stuff keywords artificially. It means the terms you use should align with how the role and its requirements are described in the job posting.
How ATSConfirm checks keywords
ATSConfirm's job-match analysis compares your resume against a specific job description. It extracts the skills, qualifications, and terminology from the posting and checks which ones appear in your resume. The result is a match score and a list of found and missing terms.
The skills-section check in the ATS scan also verifies that you have a dedicated, labeled skills section with enough entries for a keyword scan to find. A skills section that's too sparse or missing entirely is one of the most common reasons for low keyword visibility.
Keyword optimization without keyword stuffing
Effective keyword usage means reflecting the language of the job description naturally within your experience and skills sections. Keyword stuffing — hiding text, repeating terms excessively, or listing skills you don't actually have — is counterproductive. Recruiters notice it, and some ATS systems flag it.
- Mirror the exact terms used in the job posting where they genuinely apply to your experience
- Include both spelled-out terms and common abbreviations (e.g., 'JavaScript' and 'JS')
- Place your most relevant skills in a dedicated skills section near the top of your resume
- Use the job description's language for job titles and responsibilities where accurate
- Don't list skills you can't speak to in an interview
