How ATS systems parse resumes
Most applicant tracking systems convert uploaded resumes into structured data before a recruiter ever sees them. The parser extracts your name, contact details, work history, education, and skills into labeled fields. If the parser can't find a section or misreads it because of formatting, that information may be missing from what the recruiter reviews — even if it's clearly visible in your original document.
Common causes of parsing failures include multi-column layouts, text embedded in images or text boxes, tables used for visual alignment, non-standard section headings, and inconsistent date formats.
What the score means
The ATS compatibility score reflects how well your resume's structure and content align with what automated parsers expect. A higher score means fewer opportunities for an ATS to misread or drop your content.
- 90–100: Strong ATS compatibility. The resume's structure, formatting, and content are well-aligned with standard parsing expectations.
- 70–89: Moderate compatibility. Some issues may cause individual fields to be misread — worth reviewing the flagged findings.
- Below 70: Significant structural or formatting issues that are likely to cause parsing problems across most systems.
